Artist Statement

I believe it to be the duty of an artist to create work that have a human authenticity and truth.  It is my intention to showcase this in my work in a witty but blunt way.  Most of all I am inspired by the tragedy and comedy of the human condition.  Being a horror movie junky, my paintings sometimes reflect a darker psychology and a bit of gore too.  I juxtapose this against an “ideal” lighter world that appears carefree.  As I am passionate about civil rights, political and social issues often manifest in my work.

I enjoy experimenting with many different mediums including pyrography, oils, ink, acrylics, gouache, and charcoal.  I have always been most interested in the human figure and portrait as this best symbolizes humanity.  The artists who have had the most influence on my work are Henry Darger, Walton Ford, Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, Gustav Klimt, and Toulouse Lautrec.
